Rock Hill is home to Winthrop University, which contributes a college town feel to community members who can attend concerts, lectures, theater performances and athletic events on campus. Cultural, artistic and educational venues in Rock Hill include the Catawba Cultural Center, the Main Street Children’s Museum and the Museum of York County. The addition of Fountain Park in the downtown area with its amphitheater provided another venue for music and family activities. Outside the center of town, residents may enjoy outdoor activities and appreciate the area’s natural beauty at Glencairn Gardens, River Park, Rock Hill Outdoor Center, Camp Canaan and Ebenezer Park. With a short drive north of Rock Hill, they can participate in a number of water sports in the Catawba River or Lake Wylie. Rock Hill continues to grow as a sports mecca with the announcement of an indoor 100,000-square-foot sports facility to be built within the University Center/Knowledge Park complex.

There are 14 private schools located within 12 miles of Rock Hill, including Trinity Christian School, New Hope Carolinas and Westminster Catawba Christian School. Rock Hill hosts a handful of colleges and universities, including Clinton College, Winthrop University and York Technical College. Residents may access several nearby institutions of higher learning within the region, including Johnson & Wales University, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and more.

 

History

Indigenous peoples lived in the Piedmont for thousands of years, including the people of the Catawba Indian Nation who resided near Rock Hill when European settlers arrived in the 1830s and 1840s. When the Charlotte and South Carolina Railroad Company was building a line between Charlotte and Columbia, they encountered a large pile of rocks in the way. The mount was moved and a depot was built on that site, which eventually was called Rock Hill. In 1852, a post office opened, marking the date that Rock Hill is said to have begun. The town was officially incorporated in 1870.
